How to Install IPTV on Your Phone or Tablet (Android & iPhone): The 2026 Canadian Guide

Vio IPTV cover graphic with phone symbol — how to install IPTV on Android and iPhone

The living-room TV is where most people watch IPTV, but the phone is where they watch it most often: the third period on the bus home, a Canadiens game in the cottage kitchen, cartoons on a tablet during a road trip, the news from home in a lunch break. If you want to install IPTV on your phone or tablet, the good news is that it takes about five minutes and you do not need to buy anything.

This guide walks through the full setup on Android and on iPhone and iPad, explains which app to choose, shows how to enter your login, set up the TV guide in your time zone, send the picture to a bigger screen, and keep your mobile data bill under control. It ends with the fixes for the problems people hit most often on phones.

🧰 What you need before you start

📱 Which IPTV app should you use on a phone?

The app is the player: it turns your subscription into a channel list and a TV guide. It does not contain any channels on its own. The best choice on a phone is different from the best choice on a TV, because phones are driven by touch, not by a remote.

AppLimits on phonesWhy people use it
IPTV Smarters ProAds or paid features in some versionsOn Android and Apple, simple sections for Live TV, Movies and Series, touch-friendly
Apple-native playersFeature sets vary from app to appSmooth on iPhone and iPad, good picture-in-picture and AirPlay support
Other Android playersQuality varies; check reviews and update historySome offer Google Cast and better guide views on tablets
TiviMateBuilt for TV remotes; awkward on a touchscreen; not on AppleExcellent on Fire TV and Android TV, not the phone

App names and availability change from time to time, so search the store and check that the app is recently updated and well reviewed. The fuller comparison for every device is in our best IPTV app guide.

Install from the official store only. Never install an IPTV "APK" sent by a stranger or downloaded from a random website. Modified apps are a common source of malware on phones. More in Is IPTV safe?

🤖 Setting up IPTV on an Android phone or tablet

Step 1: install the player

Open the Google Play Store, search for IPTV Smarters Pro (or the player you chose), check the developer name and the recent reviews, and tap Install. On Samsung phones, Google Play is the right store; the Galaxy Store has fewer IPTV players.

Step 2: open the app and choose the login type

On first launch, accept the terms and choose Login with Xtream Codes API. This is the most reliable method because it loads live channels, the TV guide and the on-demand library in one go. If your player only shows "Load your playlist or file/URL", choose that and paste the M3U link instead.

Step 3: enter your details exactly

Tip: copy and paste rather than typing. The most common setup failure on phones is a stray space added by the keyboard at the end of the username or URL.

Step 4: let it load, then tidy up

Tap Add user. The app downloads the channel list, the guide and the library; on a phone this usually takes 30 seconds to two minutes. Then open Live TV, long-press the channels you watch most and add them to favourites. With 48,000+ channels in the lineup, a favourites list of twenty is what makes a phone pleasant to use.

Step 5: optional Android extras

🍎 Setting up IPTV on an iPhone or iPad

Step 1: install a player from the App Store

Open the App Store, search for IPTV Smarters or an IPTV player with good recent reviews, check the developer and the last update date, and tap Get. Apple only allows apps from the App Store on iPhone and iPad, which is good for safety.

Step 2: add your account

Open the app and choose Xtream Codes (sometimes labelled "Xtream API" or "Login with server") and enter the server URL, username and password from your activation email. If the app asks for a playlist instead, paste the M3U link.

Step 3: guide, favourites and picture-in-picture

Once the lineup loads, set your favourites and check the guide (see the time zone section below). Most Apple players support picture-in-picture: start a channel, swipe up to go home, and the video floats in a corner. On iPad, you can also watch in Split View beside another app.

Step 4: AirPlay to the TV

Tap the AirPlay icon in the player (a rectangle with a triangle) to send the video to an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible Samsung, LG, Sony or Vizio TV on the same Wi-Fi network. If the player has no AirPlay button, use Screen Mirroring from the Control Centre. For nightly viewing on the big screen, the native Apple TV app setup is smoother; see our installation guide.

🔑 Xtream Codes vs M3U: which login to use

Login typeDrawbacksAdvantages
Xtream Codes (URL + username + password)Needs a player that supports it (most do)Loads live TV, guide, movies and series together; updates automatically
M3U playlist linkThe guide (EPG) sometimes needs a separate link; VOD may be missingWorks in almost any player, including basic ones

If your app supports Xtream Codes, use it. Unfamiliar terms are explained in the IPTV glossary.

🕐 Get the TV guide right for your province

Canada spans six time zones, and a guide set to the wrong one makes every listing look wrong. In the player's settings, look for EPG, TV guide or time shift, and set it to your local time: Pacific in Vancouver, Mountain in Calgary and Edmonton, Central in Winnipeg and most of Saskatchewan, Eastern in Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal, Atlantic in Halifax, and Newfoundland time in St. John's. If the guide is empty, use the player's "refresh EPG" option and give it a minute. Our coverage by region page lists each province's time zone and regional sports feeds.

📶 How much mobile data does IPTV use?

This is the question that matters most on a phone, because Canadian mobile data is expensive. A simple rule: every 1 Mbps of stream uses about 0.45 GB per hour.

QualityTypical bitrateData per hour (approx.)
SD2–3 Mbps1–1.5 GB
HD (720p)3–5 Mbps1.5–2.3 GB
Full HD (1080p)6–9 Mbps3–4 GB
4K20–25 Mbps9–11 GB

A three-hour hockey game in Full HD can use around 10 GB, which is a large share of many Canadian mobile plans. On mobile data:

✈️ Watching on the go

Your subscription works anywhere you have internet: the cottage, a hotel in Banff, a hockey tournament weekend in another province, the train to Québec City. A few things to know:

Many households end up with both: a TV device for the living room and the phone app for everything else. A two-screen yearly plan is $129.99 CAD; one screen is $79.99 a year ($6.67 a month). All prices are on the pricing page.

✅ A two-minute checklist before your first game

Setting up an hour before puck drop is far less stressful than setting up during the anthem. Run through this once, the day you install the app:

🔒 A few words on safety

❓ IPTV on phones and tablets: common questions

Can I watch IPTV on my phone?
Yes. Any recent Android phone or iPhone can play IPTV with a player app such as IPTV Smarters Pro. You enter the login details from your provider and the channels, TV guide and on-demand library load in a few minutes.
What is the best IPTV app for iPhone and iPad?
IPTV Smarters Pro is the most common choice on Apple devices, and several Apple-native players with good TV guide support are also available on the App Store. TiviMate is not available on iPhone or iPad.
What is the best IPTV app for Android phones?
IPTV Smarters Pro is the simplest all-round choice on Android phones and tablets. TiviMate is designed for TV screens and remotes, so it is better suited to a Fire TV Stick or Android TV than to a phone.
How much data does IPTV use on a phone?
Roughly 1–2 GB per hour in SD or 720p, about 3–4 GB per hour in Full HD, and around 10 GB per hour in 4K. On mobile data, choose a lower-quality version of the channel or stay on Wi-Fi.
Does watching on my phone count as one of my devices?
Yes. A phone stream counts toward your plan's simultaneous screens while it is playing. You can install the app on as many devices as you like; the limit is how many stream at the same time.
Can I cast IPTV from my phone to my TV?
Often, yes. On Android, players that support Google Cast can send the stream to a Chromecast or Google TV. On iPhone, AirPlay can mirror or send video to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TV. For daily TV viewing, installing the app directly on a TV device is more reliable.
Do I need a VPN to watch IPTV on my phone?
No, a VPN is optional. It can add privacy on public Wi-Fi, but it also uses a little more data and can slow the connection.
